Ripening is accelerated by the plant hormone (and gas) ethylene, so the a box or a paper bag lets the fruit breathe but retains the ethylene.To accelerate it further, a ripe banana produces a fair bit of ethylene so putting it with unripe fruit should help it ripen.Just an idea if it ever might come in handy.
