Kitchener Ontario was originally named Berlin, but because of anti-German sentiment during World War I, the city renamed it.
I also know that Vancouver City was originally called Gastown, after its founder "Gassy" Jack. They renamed it to attract settlers and businesses.
My personal favorite however is Regina, Saskatchewan, which was originally called "Pile-of-Bones" before it was designated as the future seat of government for the Northwest Territories... (and ultimately the Province of Saskatchewan.) Then it was renamed to Regina in honor of Queen Victoria.
