Flatland Skimboarding in New Mexico

I've never heard of anyone skimming in New Mexico, but it seems to me a good way to make use of the massive lake just a few miles from our home.

Looks like a ton-o-fun. Keep us updated about skim boarding Elephant Butte Lake.

Wow ... it's amazing how far this sport has developed in the 50 years since I was a kid and went skimboarding (or wopboarding, as we then called it, because of the sound the board made when it hit the water ... WOP!) in Miami Fla. We made our wopboards in a circular style out of plywood, approx 36" in diameter if my memory serves me. The edges were beveled at about 30 (?) degrees inward top to bottom to create some hydrodynamics. Of course, the top could be customized in the paint job of choice. As I recall, there were very few of us that ever participated in this "sport". We would either go to the ocean (tidal flats made for a great wopboard environment) or we enjoyed the after-effects of hurricane flooding and skimmed in our yards or right down the street. The ocean was best ... when you got tired or took a particularly nasty fall, you could change your focus to the sea life all around. Those were great times!
