Looking for a fun read? I have been enjoying this new book "Teaming with Microbes". They reeled me right in on page 12 (the preface) with this scanning tunnel electronic microscopic image of a root eating nematode being trapped by fungus before it could destroy a tomato plant.

Yep and there's good nematodes that kill cutworms and root grubs too. You can purchase them from nurseries and garden centers. Ditto for Ladybugs when you have lots of aphids, and BT based treatments for other pests.

There's lots of bioremediation out there versus pesticides.

Then there's the sticky red ball trick... hang one in your fruit trees and it traps insects that would normally lay eggs on your friuts leading to wormy apples and such. Won't eliminate the issue but will reduce it dramatically, plus if you see certain insects on the ball you know there's a potential problem.

This is a great book. It really stopped us from tilling and changed the way we thought about gardening.
