We have been taking Sesame for a hike at a local park in Elephant Butte. We often come across interesting animal tracks. At first I thought these might belong to a mountain lion or coyote, but as I compare the print to images on-line I realize it is most likely a big dog. Look at those claws!

Domestic dogs zigzag all over the trail. There is no need for them to conserve energy, because they know you will feed them. Also dogs can not retract their claws, like a feline. So most of the time you see claws, it is a dog. Tom Brown Jr. has some interesting information about reading "pressure releases." You can easily tell which direction the animal is looking!
cats have retractable claws even large ones. k-9 claws do not retract even wolves and coyotes. tracks that look like deer with no due claws are almost assuredly feral hogs or peccary.
