Botanical Drawing Tip for Preservation

I just started doing botanical drawings. Wendy Hollender's Workbook Botanical Drawing A Beginners Guide has been a great help to me. While trying to figure out a way to preserve a plant and also see it from top to bottom (root to top of plant) while drawing it. I cut a hole in a piece of cardboard and placed it over a tall glass of water. I put the plant root through the hole and into the water. This sample has been alive and well for over a week.

Another way is to photograph the plant and root structure from several angles and draw from the photograph.. this enables you to light it anyway you want and get closeups of structures you might otherwise not be able to see in such detail...
