Our friend Luke Iseman spent the weekend with us and taught us a thing or two about bike repair. Luke lives in Austin, Tx where he runs his own pedicab shop. I had a funny feeling he'd find an unusual way to travel to us and sure enough . . . he flew to El Paso, bought a cheap bike at Walmart, tuned it and rode it to Truth or Consequences, NM to see us. Then returned it at the El Paso Walmart and flew home. This opens up a whole new transportation system! He also left us with a very cool bike defense kit which I've posted pics of. The "Citizen Citation" offers a few ways that we can express ourselves to those not willing to share the road. The "I Was a Jerk to a Cyclist" sticker is for those special road hogs who impress us with bad road behavior. Thanks Luke! See you soon.

The wallmart borrow a bike is such a good idea.
Luke, did you bring pannier bags and a rack, or did you just use a backpack?
I've created an Instructable on the full kit here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Bicycle-Defense-Kit/ . Eric: I bought the panniers and rack at Walmart as well. Bike was $200, Panniers + comfy seat + cycle computer + rack ~ another $120. All returned for full refund:)
I dislike Walmart as much as anyone, but to me this seems just a little too far. I look at Walmart as a corporate person who embraces the antithisis of everything that I strive to become or maintain. However, the dishonesty involved in "borrowing" an item like this causes me alarm. I think we are all trying to live beautiful lives; at least this is part of my goal in all the daily projects I undertake. (teaching, riding my bike, composting, reading, drying clothes on a line, etc...) Borrowing a bike from Walmart would be a compromise in my integrity (be it a small one), and would not help me live more beautifully.
Luke, I am a fan of your work. I do not wish to pass judgement. Just thought a diferent perspective might be of value in our individual and corporate persuits to make our lives, and our communities better.
