Winter Garden

Wendy Tremayne walks us through part of Holy Scraps winter garden setup. Our raised beds are made from scraps of found wood, old pallets, and windows from trailers. We are primarily growing lettuce, garlic and onions this time of year, but there are actually about 25 different vegetables planted at the moment. Due to our high elevation we use the cold frames in the colder months (Dec, Jan, and Feb).

Nice video. I just love to see people trying to figure out how to grow food in different climates. I just got 50 windows on free cycle and will be very busy building cold frames here in Va. Keep up the good work.

Hey! We just finished our first cold frame today--made from freecycle windows and leftover plywood. It's December, but we planted some greens and I guess we'll see what happens. I have no idea if you can start seeds this late and get any yield...

When did you start most of your cold frame stuff?

The one thing about using pallets, that you want to be careful of, is that some are sprayed with toxic stuff (the fire dept. once showed up at a house I was renting and heating via scrap wood, because someone complained they smelled something toxic, though it didn't smell to us, but maybe the very large chimney wafted the toxic stuff up and out).

Oh, as you can see, I'm going through your blog (and will be in your physical area probably nov 4/5 2011 on the way to 2sun) but forgot to check the email follow-up comments thing, so if you have commented on my previous comments, I don't know, and I don't recall the exact ones I commented on (though I finally remembered to check it! :) )
