Video: iBook Battery Repack

Our recent get together of friends led me to a epiphany about laptop batteries. They are all messed up! One friend asked me about her laptop battery which could barely hold a charge. Then another, then another. I didn't manage to fix any of their laptops while they were here, but we took some apart to see what was going on inside. After our friends left I searched around for replacement cells and picked some up from ebay. Now with ten minutes of time and $30 of replacement cells I can repack a battery. This video shows the process. I should mention that lithium ion batteries do have the potential to burst into flames although I've not seen anything more than a little sparking :). Now my little ibook which could hold a charge for 10 minutes lasts over four hours!

hi, happy new year !
Thanks for the video, and for the idea...

What is the capacity of the remplacement cell ? Is there any constraint here ?

and the name/artist of the music ?

I like this project. Too many electronics companies charge a fortune for what should be a really cheap part!

One thing though. It's hard to read the text in the video - especially the fine print under some of the titles. Would it be possible to make the text larger and leave it on screen longer? I found myself having to jump back multiple times just to read the text.

My batter with 1300mah cells. I replaced them with 2600mah cells. They are wired two in parallel and three sets in series so roughly a 10.8V power supply with 5200maH capacity.

Hey there, I can't seem to find batteries like the ones you found. I looked on ebay and looked through digikey and mouser.

can you help me find some cells?
Thanks
James

I have been purchasing 2600mah cells from all-battery.com. The 3.7V 18650's with tabs.

great, thanks!
I now have a new dilemma. In searching for cells I came across this
this

which is actually cheaper than 6 cells from all-battery.com

however, it's only 4400 mAh
How do I figure the mAh for the pack made from the individual cells. Is capacity summed by series or parallel?

The cells I have been using are 2600mah and due to the way most batteries are wired:

- 3 sets of pairs in parallel
- the sets are connected in series

My battery has a 5200mah capacity.

$32 is a pretty amazing price for a 4400mah setup.

My ibook originally came with a 2600mah capacity.

Keep in mind that if you have a lithium charger you can also put those old cells to use for something other than your laptop.
