We have some really small potatoes still coming in. I think Wendy just put one old potato in the ground and we got a few handfuls of potatoes in return. I've heard that there are potato diseases and it is not a good idea to just plant one from the grocery store in the ground. They look okay to me. Any thoughts on this?

I planted a sweet potato from the HEB just for the look of the vines and when they began to die back, I had a whole bunch of sweet potatoes. One was huge but, I was too dumb to photo it before the cut-up and we had several normal sized ones as well...They were really good. That was last year and we are still alive...The vines returned this year...but I didn't like the look of the tubers, so we didn't eat them. The vines make great landscape interest with not much care.
Check out Smell Like Dirt, she has a great potato growing idea...

If the potato grew it was fine. Potatoes from the store are usually sprayed with some chemical that keeps them from sprouting so that people can't keep growing their own. Potato farm workers will stay out of the field for days after this spraying because it is so toxic. Gotta love mass produced food.
earlier this year, early fall i planted an organic potato, it grew until the first few frosts, i pulled it up and there was the original potato and a few micro potatoes... Do you think they spray that stuff on organic potatoes?
