Popcorn Maker for Coffee Roasting

A neighbor turned me onto the idea of roasting my own coffee with a old popcorn maker. He even gave me a "Poppery II" unit. I just added green coffee beans and let the unit run for 8 minutes. Then I waited a hour for the beans to cool. The coffee is pretty damn good and smells great. You can buy green coffee beans for $3 a lb (fairtrade/organic).

I'm keeping my eye out for one at every garage sale I go to now!
Thanks for the great idea.

We found out that it really helps if it is the kind of hot air popper with the air channels on the side. This kind of popper causes the beans to spin. Some, however, have the air channel in the bottom. That kind tends to blow very hot chaff and beans out onto the counter, or floor, basically making a mess with objects that are too hot to handle. So if you want to try this at home, make sure it is the correct kind of machine.

I'm using the 'Poppery II' for my popcorn maker. These come highly recommended from other coffee roasting reviews on the net. It has the vents in the side.
