Shouldn't be hard to automate. Run some tubing with holes poked in it around your plants, use a 555 chip and a solenoid to switch on the water once a day. Quick question, do you collect rain water for your plants? How often does rain fall where you live?
Yeah, you are right. I want a little more than the 555 so that I can have a easily programmed control panel to play with with lots of lights.
